Virginia Base Monthly Meeting

The Virginia Base of USSVI held its monthly meeting at the American Legion Post, Midlothian, VA on 3 July2003.

18:30 – Happy Hour

The meeting was called to order at 19:30 hours by Jack Winn. Pledge of Allegiance and Honored lost boats for July

Reading of our Creed Invocation – Chaplain Pat Rogers

There were 7 signed members present.

The minutes of the June meeting were read. Motion approved to accept as read.

Treasurer’s Report – read by Herby Ortiz – motion to approve as read. Treasure has sent money to National to sponsor USS Virginia via the American Submariner.

Old Business – We are still trying to obtain a ships or suitable bell for the Virginia Base – several members will look for same. Again, all members are invited to the Picnic at Lake Gaston, August 2nd, and 3rd. Bring snacks and sleeping bags. Instructions of how to get to Dave Jonkers Lake Gaston home will be sent by e-mail to each member and posted on the website The idea of a base Christmas party is being considered, one being, if possible to be held at the Science Museum.

New Business – "Turk" Turner, former WWII sub vet and POW during WWII will be the guest speaker at our regular October meeting, 2 Oct 03. A pot luck dinner with all ladies and significant others cordially invited. Discussions on Navy Times article on reducing the Officer to Enlisted ratio. More responsibilities will be given to Petty Officer. Discussion on forthcoming trip to Groton to witness the launching of the USS Virginia. List of Submarine Books to be made available to all hands if requested. Will pick up books at meeting and return at next meeting. Some excellent books are available.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 21:30 hours.
