MEMORIAL RESOLUTION
Dated October 14, 2006
To the widow and family of
John Merlin Winn, Jr. EMCS(SS), USN (Ret)
Whereas, Jack Winn served his country in the United States Navy,
retiring as a Senior Chief Electrician’s Mate; and
Whereas, Jack Winn qualified in Submarines aboard the USS Grouper
(SS-214) in December, 1950; becoming a USSVI Holland Club Member in 2000 in
recognition of being SS qualified for 50 years; and
Whereas, Jack Winn also served aboard the submarines USS Bass
(SSK-2), USS Puffer (SS-268), USS Bowfin (SS-287), USS Cabezon (SS-344), USS
Gurnard (SS-254), USS Carbonero (SS-337) and USS Seafox (SS-402); and
Whereas, Jack Winn completed an illustrious second career as a
Master in the U.S. Merchant Marine, commanding a variety of vessels including
passenger cruise liners; and
Whereas, Jack Winn was the founding Base Commander of the USS
VIRGINIA BASE, which was chartered by USSVI on July 25, 2002; and
Whereas, Jack Winn was loved and highly respected by his family,
friends, church, community and fellow veterans; and
Whereas, Jack Winn departed on Eternal Patrol February 14, 2006;
Now, therefore be it resolved that the Officers and Members of USS VIRGINIA
BASE hereby present this Memorial Resolution to the widow and family of John
Merlin Winn, Jr. in recognition of Jack’s dedicated service to his country and
loyalty to his submarine shipmates.
